Emerging Trends in the Hospitality Industry: Changing Scenes and Newer Prospects

Students often reach that phase in life, where they have to take informed decisions about their careers. Many students these days keep asking about career choices with a specific skill-set: Students who are reasonably good in communication, have good people-skills, can work for long-hours, can handle day-to-day small-level difficulties, have a basic proficiency in computers, want to take up an industry-ready, employable job; but are not willing to take up regular engineering courses or general degree courses; what should their options be. In my opinion, their skills match perfectly with a career in the Hospitality Industry; specifically in Hotel and Tourism Management.

If students have what it takes to be a part of the glamorous profession of the hospitality industry, then it’s about the right time that one can start their journey towards their dreams. Travel and Tourism in India is the largest service sector which currently employs approximately 49 million people including skilled and semi-skilled workers and the demand for workforce is expected to increase to approximately 58 million by 2020. According to a similar study by the Planning Commission, Govt. of India, the hospitality sector creates more jobs per million rupees of investment than any other sector of the Indian economy.

However, there exists a wide gap in the hospitality job market which is yet to be filled and the Hospitality & Tourism industry still struggles to meet its demand for skilled manpower. The growing numbers of domestic and international tourists pouring in every year has increased the demand for world class hotels, restaurants, and excursion sites. The competition at its height, leaves no scope for overlooking the growing demands for better facilities for our guests; hence the hospitality industry attempts to deliver quality and warmth through its services.

However, the hospitality industry, if isolated from other allied industries, shall find it difficult to bridge the gap between the demand and the supply of skilled manpower. To assist in meeting the demands of the industry many courses have evolved recently which not only weaves the fissures, but even supports individual to achieve their dreams of a better lifestyle. “Hotel Management”, itself describes the capacity of managing a hotel; but to choose hotel management as a career is really challenging and one should be ideally prepared to understand the nuances of taking up this career as a full-time profession. A hotel management graduate ideally begins as a trainee at a hotel in which he/she should be ready to do all kinds of basic works across departments, to get the knowledge about supervisory and managerial level skills and techniques.

At this point, let us take a quick recap. How many times, the term “hotel management”, brings to one’s mind, memories of anyone who works as a chef or a waiter\waitress in a hotel? The reality of Hotel Management, however, is slightly more expansive.

There are four major functional departments and six other operative departments in a hotel:

The four major departments are: Front Office, Housekeeping, Food & Beverages Service, Food & Beverages Production.

The other operative departments running in a hotel are: Human Resources, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Finance, Information Technology, etc.

A brief description about all the departments where one can work as a trainee, shall help in providing a clear understanding of the nature of work associated with each department.

This department deals with reservations, registrations, booking of rooms, etc. This department also aides guests with providing better reception services to those who come to stay at the hotel.

This department is responsible for cleaning and sanitizing all the corners of the hotel, including indoor and outdoor areas.

Naturally, this department consists of chefs, whom most of us already know about. People who work in this department are responsible for preparing the mouth-watering dishes and beverages which often make dining in hotels tasty, welcome and famous.

People who work in this department work as a bridge between the production department to the customers. Who wouldn’t like to see a welcome face greeting a client to a restaurant the moment he/she enters for dining? A large part of luxury dining experience actually depends on the service team.

The other operative departments of the hotel also play key roles in the proper functioning of a hotel; but a significant part of it does not directly relate to graduates of a hotel management course.
